Eddie Jones says England’s Chris Robshaw ‘must work’ to get back into side

England head coach Eddie Jones says Chris Robshaw will “have to do some work” to return to the side after the former captain was dropped for the second Test against South Africa.

Robshaw will miss out for the first time in his international career when England take on the Springboks in Bloemfontein Saturday.

The flanker has made 65 appearances for England but will be replaced by Brad Shields as they attempt to recover from a 42-39 defeat in the first Test last weekend.

“Chris was very disappointed but was not overly surprised. He’s a very hard taskmaster himself and realises that he hasn’t been in great form,” Jones said.

“We’re trying to find out why but at the moment we can’t. Hopefully we’ll get him right for the third Test — most definitely he’ll come back from this. The door hasn’t been closed; players go through ups and downs, just like teams.”

“Chris accepts that — and accepts that he’ll have to do some work to get back into the side — and I’m sure he’ll do that.”

Robshaw had played every match in Jones’ tenure with England but is not in the 23 for the game in Bloemfontein, leaving his future in question.

His replacement Shields — who was born in New Zealand — fended off questions about his commitment to the national side, saying he is as English as ‘chip butties’.

“My grandparents were very English and when we were brought up there was a lot of English heritage — all the teaspoons on the wall and chip butties on a Sunday afternoon,” Shields said.

“This opportunity was there and I thought I might as well make the most of it. I’m obviously 100 per cent committed. If I didn’t want to be here I would have said no.”

“I’m willing to put everything into this jersey. I want to prove to people I really want to do well for the country.”
