Ben Te’o a major doubt for England’s autumn opener with ankle injury

Ben Te’o is the latest England injury doubt ahead of the autumn internationals with the centre set to spend a month on the sidelines.

Te’o picked up an ankle injury in Worcester’s win over Brive at the weekend and Carl Hogg, the Warriors’ head coach, says he faces at least a month out. He will find out whether he needs further surgery Monday.

The current timeframe of “at least a month” means he will miss England’s opener against Argentina on Nov. 11 and is a doubt for their second Test against Australia the week later.

“Ben’s unfortunately got a syndesmosis injury of his ankle,” Hogg said on Worcester News.

“He’s being assessed currently and will head back down to Cardiff on Monday to see whether he will go down a surgical route or whether it will be managed conservatively.

“He’s expected to be out for at least a month. But we’ll find out more next week once the swelling has settled down and it’ll give us a better idea of timeframes.”

The news will come as a big blow for England coach Eddie Jones as Te’o was expected to play a prominent role in their forthcoming November campaign.

Te’o, who won two Test caps on the British & Irish Lions tour of New Zealand, offers an option both at inside and outside centre, but Jones will now need to look elsewhere for at least the start of England’s three-Test autumn programme.
